Hurricane Harvey – One Year Later
Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the resilience of our students, faculty and staff, the University of Houston was able to emerge from the shadow of Harvey stronger and more committed to each other and our community. Here, we share some of the things we learned and experienced along the way.
Harvey was No Match for the Heart of a Cougar
“During Hurricane Harvey, I was marooned in my apartment complex near NRG Stadium. I couldn’t get to my business; I couldn’t get to campus. My cash flow stopped. I reached out to UH. Ten days later, the money hit my bank account! The whole experience made me proud to be a part of the UH community. I felt truly supported.”
Bernard Johnson (‘15), grew up in Houston’s Third Ward neighborhood. He is currently attending graduate school at the College of Technology. He is the proud father of four children and is president and founder of an import/export company.
Despite a rocky beginning, the University of Houston forged ahead in the 2017 – 2018 academic year.
